Why You Should Take a Break From Your Business in the Middle of Busy Season

When you run a trades business, it can feel like there is never a good time for you to step away. There is always something that needs your attention- a customer who “wants to deal only with the boss,” someone asking questions “only you know the answer to,” or a lack of production capacity putting you back on the tools (just to name a few).  It may seem counterintuitive, but at the busiest part of your year the best thing you can do for both yourself and your business is take some time to get away.

Recharging your body and mind by tuning out for a few days (ideally without cell service!) prevents burnout and helps fuel you to finish the year strong. At Breakthrough Academy, our membership attends an annual Summer Retreat which provides them the opportunity to get active and have a ton of fun (check out last year’s retreat video below). This ultimately enables everyone to shed the weight of everything vying for their attention and get some much-needed mental clarity. It’s especially effective if you are able to get away with some like-minded company. That way, when you’re finally out of the hustle and bustle of your business, and your head is clear, you have others to bounce your thoughts off of, as those big questions and foundational business decisions begin to bubble to the surface again.

Gaining perspective at the busiest time of year is critical. With so much going on, it is not uncommon to feel overwhelmed or isolated, and it is important to realize you are not alone. There is a lot of value in connecting with people who are going through the same entrepreneurial journey as you. Getting feedback from likeminded individuals can help you look at your business differently. An outside perspective can help identify the problems you actually need to solve to hit your long-term goals and pull you out from being caught in the weeds of day to day issues.

Getting away from your business allows you to return to it energized and motivated. It is likely that your team is also feeling the pressure of grinding it out at this time of year, and the energy you bring back to them will be contagious! Stepping back allows you to see what went well in your absence, and identify areas where new systems need to be put into place. With your refreshed outlook, you will be able to work on these and allow for smoother absences moving forward.

As the leader of your business, everyone looks to you for direction and guidance. There is so much riding on you, which is exactly why the busiest time of year is the best time of year to take a break- before you get bogged down in the details. There is nothing more important than making sure you are in the best possible state to lead, and that can only be done by making yourself a priority.

Here’s what these trades entrepreneurs got out of our 2017 Summer Retreat:
