How To Dominate AI Search Results (For Home Services)
While contractors and construction business owners are busy scrambling to get our websites ready for AI search, Phil Risher is asking a much bigger question: Will your website even matter in 3 years? In today’s episode, Phil breaks down the real secrets to dominating AI search in the home service industry.
For years, contractor marketing followed a familiar playbook: rank on Google, drive traffic to your website, convert visitors into leads and track the results.
AI is starting to rewrite that playbook.
In this episode of Contractor Evolution, Danny Kerr sits down with digital marketing specialist Phil Risher to unpack how AI search, AI agents and changing ad platforms could reshape the way homeowners find and hire contractors.
The biggest shift? Customers increasingly don’t need to visit your website to make a decision. They can describe their problem to an AI tool, research possible solutions, compare providers, and potentially book a contractor without ever following the traditional search journey.
That doesn’t mean contractors should abandon everything they’re doing today. Phil’s advice is much more practical: build the fundamentals that will matter regardless of how quickly AI evolves.

Here are four takeaways contractors can start applying now:
- Create content from real customer questions. Generic “5 Reasons to…” blog posts are becoming easier for anyone, including AI, to produce. Instead, capture the specific questions customers ask on phone calls, estimates, and sales conversations. WIth that, you can then create useful content that answers them.
- Build a reliable knowledge base for your business. Customer calls, sales conversations, reviews, SOPs, website content and brand documentation contain information AI can use to understand what makes your company different. Start organizing and capturing that knowledge instead of letting it disappear after each conversation.
- Track business outcomes, not vanity metrics. Website traffic and keyword rankings may become less meaningful as more searches end without a click. Keep a close eye on year-over-year leads, estimates, jobs, close rates, average ticket, and ultimately revenue.
- Demand clear return on ad spend. As Google integrates more AI into advertising, attribution could become increasingly complicated. Knowing whether your marketing investment actually produces revenue will matter far more than impressions, clicks, or cost per lead alone.
Phil also believes contractors have an opportunity precisely because the landscape is changing. Companies willing to experiment now with better customer data, more authentic content, online scheduling, and AI tools could gain ground while competitors continue relying on the old playbook.
AI search is moving quickly, but contractors don’t need to chase every new tool. Start with the fundamentals: know your numbers, capture what your customers are really asking and create content worth recommending.
