Why Do So Many Contractors Hate Their Business?
A lot of contractors quietly hate the business they built, and it happens just as often to the ones who are winning. Spencer Sheinin breaks down why the fun disappears once survival is handled, and how to get it back without blowing up what you spent a decade building.
You built the company. You survived the long days, cash flow crunches, hiring headaches and growing pains.
Maybe the business is even doing better than it ever has.
So why don’t you feel excited about it anymore?
In this episode of Contractor Evolution, Danny Kerr sits down with entrepreneur, CPA and Shift Financial founder Spencer Sheinin to unpack a problem successful business owners don’t talk about enough: losing your sense of meaning in the business.
For Spencer, burnout isn’t always about working too many hours. Sometimes, it happens when you spend too much time doing work you don’t enjoy, or keep chasing growth without knowing what you’re actually growing toward.

Here are a few takeaways for contractors:
- Survival mode can only carry you so far. The pressure to make payroll, win jobs and keep the company alive can be incredibly motivating. But once the business becomes stable, that source of motivation can disappear. You need something else pulling you forward.
- Question the goals you’re chasing. Growth isn’t inherently bad. It means more revenue. More employees. More locations. Bigger jobs. But Spencer argues that business owners can fall into “robot mode,” where they chase goals because they’ve been conditioned to believe bigger is always better.
- Look backward to figure out what matters going forward. Spencer recommends identifying the moments in your life that still stick with you: the highs, lows and experiences you can vividly remember. Those formation moments can reveal patterns in what genuinely matters to you.
- Build meaning into the business you already have. Finding purpose doesn’t mean selling your contracting company and starting a nonprofit. It could mean finding deeper meaning in the work itself, using your business to support a cause you care about, or creating opportunities for your employees and community.
The goal isn’t to eliminate every frustrating task or difficult day. Running a contracting business will still be hard.
But when the work connects to something that actually matters to you, Spencer argues that those hard days become easier to navigate. And that renewed energy doesn’t just affect you, but it can ripple through your leadership team and the rest of the company.
