The REAL Impact Of AI in Construction [And How To Prepare]
When ChatGPT released in 2022, we all knew the start of a new era in tech was coming. But we couldn't possibly comprehend just how much our industry was about to change. Today, I've brought on DJ Carroll to talk about where the industry is now, where it's headed, and what we HAVE to learn to survive what he calls the next industrial revolution.
AI is moving fast enough that it’s easy for contractors to land at one of two extremes: ignore it because it feels overhyped, or chase every new tool that promises to transform the business overnight.
DJ Carroll argues there’s a better approach.
In this episode of Contractor Evolution, DJ joins Danny Kerr to break down where AI is actually useful for contractors today - from marketing and inbound calls to SOPs, team management and company knowledge. They also discuss how owners can start experimenting without getting buried in shiny objects.
The big message? You don’t need to become a tech expert. But you do need to start learning where AI fits into the way your company already operates.

Key Takeaways for Contractors
- Map your workflows before buying more AI tools. Instead of asking, “What can AI do?” look at the repetitive workflows already happening in sales, marketing, operations and administration. Then identify where AI can reduce manual work, speed up execution or improve consistency.
- Start building your company’s memory now. Meeting transcripts, team conversations, customer interactions and documented processes become increasingly valuable when AI can analyze them. DJ recommends capturing and organizing this information so AI has real context about how your company operates instead of starting from scratch every time.
- Use the 10-80-10 framework. DJ’s approach is to have a human guide the first 10% of the work, let AI handle roughly 80% of the heavy lifting, then bring the human back in for the final 10% of review and refinement. AI supports the thinking, but it shouldn’t eliminate your judgment.
- Start where AI can solve real business problems. For contractors, that might mean answering missed inbound calls, booking appointments, drafting marketing content, developing hooks for ads or turning team conversations into documented SOPs. The goal isn’t using AI everywhere. It’s applying it where there’s a clear operational or financial payoff.
- Experiment before you commit. DJ recommends trying new software on monthly plans, involving your team and regularly auditing what you’re actually using. AI adoption should become an ongoing business conversation, not a one-time software purchase.
DJ also gets into AI-powered voice tools, building better prompts, creating company knowledge databases and why he believes contractors who learn to combine technology with their real-world expertise will have a major advantage.
The tools will keep changing. The opportunity is to start building the habit of experimentation now.
