She Sold 600 Homes In A Year. Here's How $100M Contractors Scale.
Most contractors struggle to close a million in sales. Today’s guest, Charlene Barrett used to sell hundreds of millions every single year. In this episode, she’s revealing the secrets to scaling operations without losing the quality of your work and customer experience.
Most contractors know referrals are valuable. They cost less to acquire, often close faster, and usually come with a higher level of trust.
But referrals don't happen just because you deliver good work.
In this episode of Contractor Evolution, BTA coach Charlene Barrett explains how contractors can intentionally design a customer experience that generates stronger reviews, more referrals, and repeat business.
Before joining Breakthrough Academy, Charlene helped oversee the sale of as many as 600 homes in a single year. A major part of that success came from putting the customer at the centre of the business, measuring their experience, and improving the moments that mattered most.
The key distinction is between customer service and customer experience.
Customer service is typically reactive. Something goes wrong, the customer calls, and someone has to resolve the problem. Customer experience includes the entire journey - from the first marketing interaction through sales, production, project completion, and post-project follow-up.
When that journey is intentionally designed, fewer issues reach the customer service stage.

Key Takeaways For Contractors
- Map the entire customer journey. Break the experience into three phases: pre-job, production and post-project. Identify every interaction, handoff, expectation and potential point of friction.
- Communicate even when there is no news. Silence creates uncertainty. A simple no-update update can reassure a customer during permit delays, weather disruptions, or schedule changes.
- Create intentional wow moments. Memorable gestures do not need to be expensive. The goal is to show customers that your team listened, understood what mattered to them, and treated them like more than a job number.
- Measure the experience with real data. Reviews, surveys, deficiencies, callbacks, and recurring customer questions can reveal exactly where your process is breaking down.
- Stay connected after the project. Educational follow-ups, warranty check-ins, anniversary messages, and personal notes can keep your company top of mind long after the final invoice is paid.
Charlene recommends starting with a simple three-question post-project review:
- What went best?
- Where can we improve?
- And who do you know who needs similar services?
Those questions give you actionable feedback, expose patterns in your operations, and create a natural opportunity to ask for referrals.
The goal is not to redesign your entire business overnight. Pick one recurring frustration, fix it, measure the result, and then move to the next opportunity.
